femLENS is running a series of documentary photography workshops in partnership with “Amal, Berlin!”. Amal Berlin is an Arabic, Farsi and German-language digital newspaper that covers local news in Berlin and Germany. They work primarily for and with refugees who are new in the city and can’t read local news in German. The platform reaches around 20,000 people in and around Berlin, and the numbers increase every day.
Amal’s newsroom has “journalists from Syria, Afghanistan, Egypt and Iran who run this mobile news platform as a local daily newspaper for the smartphone”. Amal is a great project for journalists who miss their jobs, while filling a need for reliable information on the part of the refugees and German society.
Our workshop participants come from Egypt and Iran, who want to provide the best quality information to their readers. Together with Kate, they work on storytelling and technological literacy. The goal of the workshops is to give them a set of techniques and tools so that they improve their photos, and to encourage them to continue and expand their work.
