Take pART! Artivism Toolkit on a bookshelf in Narva Art Residenct

In an overwhelmingly digital world, choosing print can feel like swimming against the current. But at femLENS, we believe deeply in the power of print media—magazines, zines, postcards, and even stickers—as tools for visibility, connection, and care.

When we publish an issue of We See magazine or a zine from a workshop, we’re not just producing content—we’re creating something that can be held, shared, gifted, displayed, and rediscovered. And that matters.

Print Has Presence

A printed photo story on a kitchen table or library shelf has a different life than a post on a screen. It doesn’t require a login, internet connection, or algorithm to be seen. It can be flipped through casually, stumbled upon by someone who wasn’t looking for it but needed it anyway.

We’ve distributed We See magazine to libraries, community centres, exhibitions, and individuals who pass it on or leave it somewhere unexpected. The second issue, for example, can be found in the public library in Torrox, Spain. Some of our zines are for sale at the Educational Bookshop in Jerusalem, where they sit among political texts and cultural histories—quietly but insistently adding new visual narratives to the mix.

Print Connects Creators and Audiences

In July 2023, we brought our materials to the Tsundoku Art Book Fair, held during the PhotoIreland Festival. Over four days, we sold printed copies of We See, zines, postcards, and stickers. Visitors flipped through pages, read captions, asked about contributors, and walked away holding a piece of someone else’s story.

These moments can’t be replicated by a scroll or a swipe. They build conversation and memory. They turn storytelling into shared space.

Print Is Accessible—In a Different Way

While digital platforms are important for reach and speed, they aren’t accessible to everyone.

Print allows us to honour the work of our contributors by giving it physical form. It also allows us to place that work in the world where it can last, travel, and resurface.
